BRAIN: What are you currently working on?
Tanja Klumpp: I am currently devising methods that enable us to analyse the Aurase® production process. We use a number of different enzymatic and immunological methods, which aim to safeguard the high quality standards we use to measure the Aurase® product.
Jens Boethe: We recently switched to an improved Aurase® production strain in order to enhance efficiency. I handle adjustments to the process, which sometimes involves devising completely new steps. I also prepare the possible transfer of this technology to external producers and provide samples for analysis so that we can continuously examine the quality of our work.
BRAIN: What is so appealing for you working on this project?
Tanja Klumpp: It is attractive because it combines a wide variety of different priority subjects that play a role in product development. I work closely with various BRAIN specialists as well as external partners. The aim of the project is clearly defined and we all work together to achieve it.
Jens Boethe: Since this is a complex project, the scope of technologies required is also extremely large. That makes it very interesting, as does the fact that I am involved in all development steps from creating the production strain and providing the enzymes through to formulating marketable products.
BRAIN: How did you end up working for this project?
Tanja Klumpp: I have been working intensively on enzymes, enzyme production and analysis since my studies. As a member of our enzyme technology platform, I also do research on enzyme development and applications. For a couple of months now, I have had the opportunity to contribute my expertise to the Aurase® project.
Jens Boethe: Once BRAIN had developed the first production strain for the enzyme used in biological wound bed preparation, the team needed further expertise in upstream processing (USP) and downstream processing (DSP) in order to produce the first product batches. I was selected for my know-how and experience in 2010, and have been a member of the team ever since.
Tanja Klumpp completed her bachelor’s course in the biosciences at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt in 2010 and obtained her master’s degree in molecular biotechnology there in 2013 in cooperation with Fraunhofer IGB. She then joined BRAIN, where she has since been concerned with molecular biology, strain development, protein production and protein engineering.
Jens Boethe completed a course of training as a biology laboratory technician certified by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) at BASF SE in Ludwigshafen. He then began his career at BRAIN in October 2004. Since then he has been involved in specific research projects for the biotechnological production of speciality proteins. He has been a member of the Aurase® project team since 2010.
