There are more than 40 million patients with chronic wounds worldwide. Doctors speak of chronic cases whenever treatment takes longer than eight weeks. In Germany, the wounds of about one third of patients become chronic.

About half of all patients with decubitus ulcers (also known as bedsores) and diabetic foot syndrome become chronic wound patients. Treatment may take many months or even years.

Experts presume that the global market for wound treatment products and bandages will reach an annual volume of more than USD 20 billion by 2020. The average annual growth rate of this market is estimated to amount to eight per cent between 2014 and 2020.

The costs of treating patients with chronic wounds amount to EUR 2-4 billion each year in the EU member states. Individual treatment costs are around EUR 10,000 per patient. Wound dressings and bandages account for about a fifth of these costs.
