Dr. Dirk Sombroek

Head Technology Unit
BioActives & Performance Biologicals

Dr. Dirk Sombroek, born in 1979, studied chemistry at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany. He obtained his doctorate at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg at the Faculty of Biosciences and at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg in the cellular senescence research group as part of the research topic cell biology and tumor biology. As a graduate of Helmholtz International Graduate School for Cancer Research at DKFZ he was involved in characterizing the function and regulation of cellular DNA repair systems. He completed a research project on the further regulation of such systems as a post-doctoral researcher at DKFZ.

Dr. Sombroek began his industrial career at BRAIN as a research scientist and project manager in the Technology Unit BioActives & Performance Biologicals in 2010. Owing to his expertise in the fields of cell-based in vitro assay systems and screening for active cosmetic ingredients, and the assessment of chemical structures and the causal relationships between them, he was appointed Platform Coordinator of the BioActives Development Technology Platform in January 2015. There he was mainly responsible for the computer-based (in silico) assessment and technical development of bioactive molecules. In parallel to this, Dr. Sombroek took on the overall coordination of the “Natural Life Excellence Network 2020” (NatLife 2020) strategic alliance, which was set up by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Dr. Sombroek has been Head of BRAIN’s Technology Unit BioActives & Performance Biologicals since March 2019.
